WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR ENGAGEMENT SESSION
First off, we just want to say… Congratulations! Your engagement season is a special time to cherish and be celebrated. As photographers, our job is to not only capture these important moments, but also to be your support team throughout your planning process and on your big day! We love taking the time to get to know our couples and help them celebrate this amazing season.
Many couples ask us what they should wear, so here’s some more detailed information on how to choose your engagement photo outfits.
Coordinate, don’t match.
We like to recommend that you don’t wear the exact same color or shirts as one another. It works really well to have one of you in a pattern and the other in a solid color that compliments the pattern. Another option is to find clothing with colors that pair well together, such as complimentary colors or same colors with different intensity or shades. This is especially important when we’re photographing close ups where your outfit in entirety does not show.
Dress the season & location.
Engagement sessions in the winter and summer are going to look a lot different when it comes to clothing. If we’re at the beach in the hot of summer, feel free to kick your shoes off for part of the session or if we’re in the snow, you might want to wear sweaters, coats (not too bulky) and boots.
The location is especially important. It’s not congruent to wear stilettos in the middle of the woods, although we see it happen from time to time. There are ways to make a “dressier” outfit work in the woods, but take note of your shoe choice. We don’t want you to look too uncomfortable or out of place.
Consider a guest book or wall print.
Are you hoping to print these images? If so, we like to remind our couples to wear clothing that will hang well in your home or look nice in a guest book that you will look back on forever. Maybe you’d like to consider your clothing colors and locations based on your home decor if a large art print is the end goal. Our job is to help you document this time and beginning of your marriage to remember for years to come, so picking outfits and colors that are timeless is important. Also, if you’re using these images for a “Save the Date” or wedding invitation, the colors you wear might also be important to you.
One casual, one dressy.
A great way to break up our portrait sessions is to change your clothes! We love when couples wear two outfits to provide variety to their set of images and this works really well in a guest book design. We recommend wearing a more casual outfit and also bringing a dressier option.
